On this DVD, the viewer is invited to determine the needs of the position before randomly picking candidates moves. The author then shows basic calculation techniques which help you to accelerate and to improve your thinking process. The first chapter focuses on forcing moves (checks, captures, threats) to keep the initiative or to continue with an attack. In the second part, Ris explains how to eliminate candidate moves to improve the decision making process. You can also give your creativity (imagination) a boost by going through spectacular examples in which it seems at first almost impossible to find a good continuation. In the end 10 test puzzles allow you to test your calculation skills in practice.

Typical Mistakes by 1600-1900 Players (DVD)

As the National Head Coach for the English Chess Federation I train many improving players, and see some typical mistakes that repeat themselves. In this DVD I have taken a large collection of games played by players, predominantly in the rating range 1600-1900, and I have looked for typical mistakes. I have broken these examples into various themes such as “Miscalculating Forcing Lines”, “Being Too Materialistic” and “King Safety” amongst others. Each theme has several examples to demonstrate typical mistakes, and there are various test throughout the DVD so that the viewer can try and find the best move in certain positions. This should be a great tool for players to use in order to improve their middlegame and endgame play. It will hopefully also highlight any areas that you need to work on in order to improve quickly. Enjoy the DVD!

A Gambit Guide through the Open Game Vol.1 and 2 (DVD)

DVD 1: Are you well versed in main lines but are you also often surprised by old and forgotten gambit lines? Or are you tired of main lines and do you prefer some easy to learn, yet very dangerous gambits? This is your DVD! In his Gambit Guide Vol. 1 Dutch Grandmaster Erwin l’Ami takes you on a journey through time and shows gambit lines in the Open Games (that is, after 1.e4 e5). This DVD includes the infamous Frankenstein-Dracula Gambit, the Cochrane Gambit, the Belgrade Gambit and, of course, the mother of all gambits: the King’s Gambit. Many of these long forgotten lines offer plenty of room for creativity and exploration and this DVD is full of new ideas with which you can surprise your opponents. Apart from a theoretical section and illustrative model games the DVD contains a number of exercises, which allow you to test your new knowledge. L’Ami, winner of the Reykjavik open 2015 and a former second to World Champion Veselin Topalov, is the perfect man to guide you through the maze of dazzling complications! DVD 2: William Davies Evans was a Welsh sea-captain and gave the Evans Gambit that brought White hundreds and thousands of brilliant victories its name. In Volume 2 of his Gambit Guide Dutch Grandmaster Erwin l’Ami brings back the romantic days of chess when pawns were routinely sacrificed in huge numbers! In Volume 1 of this series we saw the many dangerous gambits White can play after 1.e4 e5. In Volume 2 we see enterprising gambits such as the Marshall Gambit, the Scotch Gambit, the Jänisch Gambit, and the Evans Gambit mentioned above. Many of these long forgotten lines offer plenty of room for creativity and exploration and this DVD is full of new ideas with which you can surprise your opponents.
